Educational and child psychology

Educational psychologists work with both adults and children (although mainly children) and are involved in diagnosis, assessment and the implementation of appropriate training programmes. Generally their interests are in helping children to maximise their potential and in helping teachers to support this. Their work may be in mainstream or special schools, in conjunction with Local Education Authorities, as well as private work. Postgraduate degrees are generally at Masters level and predominantly require a one year full time course. There are currently 16 accredited courses around the UK. The rules vary across the UK in terms of whether you need to qualify as a teacher first. The OU course ED209 provides lots of useful reading in preparation for this course - and many institutions recommend their textbooks.

Details of all accredited courses are available at the BPS website
